A few years ago, a young Australian couple decided to try poker online.
“We wanted to see if we could beat the house,” says Sarah, a 27-year-old housewife.
“There was just this big house that we wanted to beat.”
“The first week, it was pretty hard,” says David, a 29-year‑old accountant.
“You had to spend about two hours on the couch, playing cards and sitting around in circles and watching all these videos.”
After two weeks of sitting around watching video poker videos, Sarah and David were ready to make their dream a reality.
“I was sitting there in my lounge watching a video and I was like, ‘Wow, I’m going to have to buy this thing.'”
“I’ve got to get this thing, I’ve got some cards in my hands,” Sarah says.
“And I was watching all of these poker videos online and I had to decide if I was going to spend money or buy something.”
“It was pretty clear that I needed to buy something, and I needed something quick.
So I started to look for deals on eBay and Amazon.”
It was during this time that the couple met an Australian-Australian who was also a poker addict.
“She was very sweet and she was the one who introduced me to poker and said, ‘I know that there’s some people out there who can’t play poker, but I can help you out,'” says Sarah.
“So we did that, and she took me to a poker room in Sydney and we just played and just talked for an hour.”
“We sat down and we made a little game of it,” says Chris.
“Then she brought us the house.
She got me into the house, she gave me a couple of hundred bucks and said ‘you can’t really be a poker player if you don’t have a house.'”
“We’re just so happy to be here,” says Adam.
“It’s such a relief to know that we can finally be here.”
Sarah and Adam have been playing poker online since 2012, and have spent more than $1,400,000 in total on the hobby.
“If you think about it, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for poker,” says Paul, a 24-year‐old business owner.
“When we first started out, it wasn’ not like we had to get a house, it didn’t matter.
But it’s just like when you’re a kid, you just have to go to school and then you can go play, and then it becomes your life.” “
Now it’s like, we’re like, alright, we just got a house.
But it’s just like when you’re a kid, you just have to go to school and then you can go play, and then it becomes your life.”
Sarah says the gaming industry in Australia is thriving, with a big number of people working in the industry.
“Everyone’s just so grateful to have a hobby that they love,” she says.
“We want to make it the best hobby for our family.”
The couple also plan to move to the US in the next few months, and will spend a lot of time living in the US.
“Right now, the money that we have in the bank is our only money,” says Peter.
“Because we live here, it’s pretty hard for us to make ends meet.”
